Oh hello! I\u2019d say I didn\u2019t see your there but I did because I\u2019m right behind you. Hopefully you\u2019re here to get an in depth explanation about the genesis of the art I made for Hot Ghoul Summer. Why this? Why now? What next?<\/p>

I\u2019ll start with why now. When you\u2019re a sole trader in the UK you are a company and I thought the most company-like thing to do - besides give myself an expensive refurb while not increasing wages in line with inflation - would be to use a cultural reference that\u2019s already old enough to be in primary school.<\/p>

Why this? I wanted to show the damage and mental strain that the mould of societal expectations and the wellness industry has on us, especially around our bodies in summer. As neurodivergent people there\u2019s already a bunch of sensory stuff we have to deal with; when you take all the internal stuff we\u2019re juggling and combine it with 30 degree heat, summer often feels like it pushes us past breaking point.<\/p>

That\u2019s Hot<\/u><\/strong><\/p>

The sensory overload is real; you feel sweaty; you\u2019re burning a bunch of extra energy trying to cool down; you can\u2019t get to sleep until 2 o\u2019clock in the morning because it\u2019s sweltering\u2026 and still you\u2019re expected to function the same as if everything is fine. But this is what\u2019s underneath that mask of \u2018being okay\u2019. I don\u2019t know about never letting them see you sweat but maybe try letting them see you melt, I bet it\u2019d really freak them out.<\/p>

My Eyes Are Down Here<\/u><\/strong><\/p>

\"divvnsyo2hfx1wcgrzqkdwucgaqe0wflj7d2svqs3zngzcoh.jpg.jpg?w=1140&v=2\"Here I flipped the phrase \u201cmy eyes are up here\u201d to play with objectification by drawing people\u2019s eyes to something horrific. The phrase combined with the pose are intended to make people think twice about whether they would treat people poorly if they had to witness the effects. We all just want to be able get through the summer without worrying about being ogled in the clothes we\u2019re wearing to avoid melting. Hopefully this makes some people think twice about it.<\/p>

Summer Body<\/u><\/strong><\/p>

\"tparvieewq4ztjcpisr2oyea3vgtn5m9gq1qq3r77xyrykaj.jpg.jpg?w=1140&v=2\"I\u2019ve heard plenty about \u201csummer bodies are made in winter\u201d but with ADHD comes a time blindness that means I don\u2019t realise I should\u2019ve been crafting a summer-worthy physique until July. As such, I\u2019ve never had visible abs so I figured \u201chere\u2019s my chance!\u201d and I took some inspiration from those large t-shirts with bikini bodies on and made a new version. <\/p>

The idea this time being to illustrate the danger of working to attain a goal that society has told us (or at the very least heavily implied, along with sidelong glances while we enjoy a pizza) we should aim for, on a timeline we struggle to keep tabs on. <\/p>

Seed Oils<\/u><\/strong><\/p>

\"krtl2yfco71xp4jwutnueuxmxet32yvpzmvto6urqp6qaoq3.jpg.jpg?w=1140&v=2\"Seed oils are not what cause you to burn when exposed to UV radiation from the sun. I had those 50\u2019s style painted adverts in mind when I made this. The advert vibe (despite not selling anything specific) is a reminder that the people who make claims like \u201cI stopped eating seed oils and I never burn anymore\u201d are trying to sell you something. This art can\u2019t protect you from sunburn, but it might remind you to wear sun cream.<\/p>

What next? A collection of cute critters will be coming soon. After that the planning for spooky season begins.
